Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) False Alarm

BrianC & Jen reported a crazy looking bug in their courtyard the other day. They furiously snapped a pic for the record. By first impression it looked like the notorious Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) which has infested and destroyed forests in the eastern region of the US, Canada and Europe. The ALB is native to China and the Federal Government is trying to eradicate this species due to its potential impact to the forests.

This bug was not the ALB. After diligent research, BrianC figured it is a look-alike and commonly mistaken as the ALB. It is in fact a Florida Longhorn Beetle Plectrodera scalator (Fabricius).

There is another notorious beetle found in South Main and continues to wreak the livers of it's residents. It is the Green Beetle.

Oh well, after all this entymological crap, let's all go down to the Green Beetle and have a drink :)

More on the Florida Longhorn Beetles here.
